Wind Turbines

[Under Construction]

Soma Wind Turbines provide an attractive, reliable and economical source of electricity for remote areas.  They provide enough power for lights, radio, television, fan, water pumps, kitchen appliances, microwave ovens, washing machines, high efficiency DC refrigeration, power tools and more, depending on the average wind speed in the area. Wind turbines provide the ideal source of power for telecommunications and scientific equipment.

Durability
Soma wind turbines have been manufactured since 1978.The company has a design philosophy of mechanical simplicity and rugged durability. All components are made from the highest quality materials to withstand long-term wear and fatigue. Corrosion protection is a high priority. The blades are constructed using a hollow moulded fibreglass technique that is unique to Soma turbines.

Performance
Large rotor diameters ensure high efficiency in light to moderate wind speeds. The brushless permanent magnet alternators used on all Soma machines are designed to produce a power curve that matches the output of the 2-blade rotor while operating at optimal tip speed ratios.

Simple Installation
Installation can be carried out by following the instructions in the manual provided. It should take two people no more than two days to complete.

Feathering Mechanism
The tilt-back feathering mechanism relieves pressure on the wind generator and tower in strong winds. This is a fail-safe design with mechanical simplicity. A hydraulic damper limits the feathering action in gusty wind conditions.

Warranty
Soma wind turbines are guaranteed to be free of any defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year. Soma has a long-standing reputation for providing complete back-up and service facilities, if required.

Wind Turbine Generators 200 Watts - 12V Version

12V and 24V models now available!

This is NOT a toy. The unit is quite massive and ruggedly built. It will generate 200 watts at wind speeds as low as 8 metres per second. It will deliver useful power at a gentle 3 metre/sec breeze or give up to 300W at higher wind velocities.

The 71kg unit features a 3 phase permanent magnet alternator with a serious 2.1 meter diameter 3 blade rotor. The unit will withstand wind speeds of 40m/sec (144km/hr). All mechanical components are either cast steel or aluminium.

There are two units available: one for 12V systems and another for 24V systems. The 12V unit has a 16V output  and the 24V models has a 28V output which will charge an appropriate battery bank.

Included is 4.5 meters of tower piping, tower base, guy wires, steel rope clamps and other mounting hardware. Some skill is required in construction e.g. concreting, mechanical assembly and rigging.

The unit is made in China clearly for a remote application. Alas, the instructions are woeful but assembly s straightforward. You have been told!

Wind turbines provide far, far more power per dollar - provided you have wind. Most places however have some wind over a 24 hour period. If you have been looking for a decent wind generator but have been scared off by the price this product is for you.

Note: The product is supplied in three boxes, with a combined weight of 86kg. Not all stores will be carrying the unit from stock due the lack of space. You can order a unit from any store, but your local store may have one. Call first. Our Techstore staff will quote freight for orders placed via the internet, mail order, or fax.
